Processed vs. Whole foods

I received a reminder from a new friend as we discussed eating processed vs. whole foods.  My question to her was, "how do we know what foods to consider as processed?"  She gave me a quick and simple response--shop from the outside perimeter of the grocery store.  Avoid box and canned items as possible.  She also said, "start there and you will see change".
